Benefits of Physiotherapy During Pregnancy and Beyond

Through experiencing my own pregnancies and supporting thousands of women throughout theirs, I know that pregnancy is a transformative journey, both mentally and physically. As the body adapts to the growing baby, women often experience a range of physical challenges that can impact their overall well-being. That's why understanding the role of physiotherapy throughout pregnancy is key. It’s a powerful tool to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and promote a healthy, active pregnancy. Some of the main benefits include:

  1. Managing Pregnancy-Related Pain

Many women experience back pain, pelvic pain, and joint discomfort during pregnancy due to the changing posture and increased weight. Physiotherapy offers targeted exercises and techniques, such as manual therapy and stretching, to reduce pain and enhance mobility.

  1. Strengthening Core and Pelvic Floor Muscles

A strong core and pelvic floor are essential for supporting the body during pregnancy and aiding in delivery.  As baby grows there is an added stretch on the abdominal muscles and they are not necessarily strong enough in that new stretched position. This can lead to back pain and poor strength when it comes time to push the baby out. And while coughing and leaking is common during pregnancy it is NOT normal. Physiotherapists can guide women through safe, effective exercises to strengthen these muscles, reduce the risk of incontinence, and prepare for childbirth.

  1. Improved Posture and Alignment

Postural changes during pregnancy, caused by the growing belly and hormonal shifts, can lead to strain on muscles and joints. Physiotherapy helps correct posture and maintain proper alignment, preventing further issues and discomfort.

  1. Preparation for Labor and Delivery

Physiotherapy can include breathing techniques, relaxation exercises, and labour-preparation stretches and movements that empower women for childbirth. These practices can aid in smoother delivery and promote quicker recovery. Physiotherapists are experts in pain management and can offer a unique approach to coping with pain during labour.

  1. Relief from Swelling and Circulation Issues

Pregnancy can sometimes cause swelling, especially in the legs and feet or vulval area, due to increased fluid retention. This can lead to issues such as varicose veins, carpal tunnel syndrome or vulval varicosities. Physiotherapy techniques such as gentle massage, lymph stimulation and mobility exercises can improve circulation and reduce swelling.

  1. Bladder and Bowel Issues

Hormonal changes, weight gain and things such as iron tablets can have an impact on a pregnant woman’s bladder and bowel function. Issues such as constipation, haemorrhoids, needing to rush to the toilet all the time and worrying about sneezing and leaking have a huge impact on our quality of life. While you are pregnant is an excellent time to really get to understand the parts of your body that don’t usually get talked about and physiotherapists that specialise in this area are key to this. Soon enough you’ll be happy talking about wees and poos in relation to your baby but it’s important that you understand yours first.

  1. Postpartum Recovery

Physiotherapy doesn’t end after childbirth—it continues to be a vital part of recovery. Strengthening exercises and treatment can help women regain strength, address postnatal aches, and adapt to the physical demands of caring for a newborn. They can help with bladder and bowel issues, give excellent advice about care of a swollen perineum or painful stitches, assist with pelvic floor recovery, ease painful nipples and mastitis and give solid advice about a safe and satisfying return to sex and regular exercise.

  1. Emotional Benefits

Physical discomfort can take a toll on emotional well-being. Physiotherapy not only alleviates pain but also promotes relaxation and confidence, contributing to a more positive pregnancy experience.

A physiotherapist is a valuable ally and part of the team to support women throughout their pregnancy journey. By addressing physical challenges and preparing the body for childbirth, it helps expectant mothers feel strong, supported, and ready for this incredible chapter in life.

If you're pregnant and considering physiotherapy, my course offers short targeted physiotherapy advice for every part of your pregnancy at a cost that is way below a visit to a physiotherapist. However, apparently the French (who seem to be very good at understanding how important it is that a woman recovers completely after giving birth) offer 10 free visits to a Women’s health physiotherapist and I would also encourage you  to consult a qualified physiotherapist to explore personalized care for your unique needs. Every pregnancy is different, and professional guidance ensures safety and effectiveness.

Surround yourself with the support that you and your baby need.

Best wishes on your pregnancy journey,

Naomi
